I took a daytrip to Ulm today, the birthplace of Albert Einstein. It is best known for its cathedral, the Ulmer Munster, which boasts the tallest church tower in the world.
768 steps bring you near the top of the spire. The last time i experienced this, i was... ahem... half my age. I still remember the view, but the steel gratings have all been since added.
The interior of the church presents one at the same time with centuries old gothic architecture combined with modern stained class window work which has replaced many pieces destroyed in the second world war.
In the shadow of the cathedral was a restaurant which simply called to me with it's homemade Käsespätzle and dunkles Hefeweizen. Maybe it had something to do with the name of the restaurant, Ulmer Spatz, "the sparrow of Ulm." These favorite German egg noodles of mine are called Spätzle, or "little sparrows," a term of endearment much like "my little chickadee." Back in college, i used to live off the stuff!

Mmmm... those Spätzle look lekker! Were they as good as yours? I remember being in Ulm with you, barely (half our age ago -- wow! what a ride it's been!)
